Today Kim and I got daring and attempted our first all downhill Payson Canyon run. There was a group going up to the top doing 20-22 milers but since we haven't been doing the steep, completely downhill runs we decided to start just below Payson Lakes and go 14-15.

This run has some very steep downhill sections with grades in the 6-8 percent range, similar to the very steepest sections of St. George but lasting longer. Needless to say it can be a risky run and a few runners have injured themselves pretty good while running it. But if you can survive 2 or 3 times down and get the legs used to it, it makes SGM feel a whole lot easier during the race and in days following.

The OTHER concern on this run is bears, since some of the runners saw a momma bear and 2 cubs while running this route on Wednesday. We were armed with mace just in case (would it even help?) but fortunately we had no bear encounters. All the bow hunter traffic coming up the road probably helped keep the wildlife away.

Kim hasn't had very good luck with her ITB running Payson in the past so we did our best to take it easy and hold good form. We were mostly successful, although she was feeling the first inkling of ITBS pains during the last 2 miles or so. Wisely she decided to walk the last 1/2 mile and it appears as I write this she is doing fine and the knee is feeling dandy.

Pushed the last mile a bit and ran it around 7-7:15 pace so I'll call that a MP mile.

Good job on the the downhill run! I can't imagine running like that downhill. Everything around here is totally flat so I would probably be one of the people that would get injured trying it. Good to see your training continuing to go so well.

Thanks Jim. The downhill running is scary at first but with some practice it becomes a whole lot of fun, kind of like and arcade ride!

I looked at our route today with the course tool, this one does fit into the bit extreme category for downhill, we dropped nearly 3000 ft., mostly in the first 11 miles.

Jim...one of the comments Tom made on our run this morning was how sad he was for people who don't live near beautiful canyons like we do and only get to run on flat all the time. We really have some neat places to run, we just need to be careful not to let them hurt us.

Glad you came out healthy!

Wow! That is some serious drop in elevation. I bet the views are amazing. I have never been to Utah (unless you count the airport) but everyone that I have talked with says it is beautiful. I am going to have to get out there and hit some of the parks and maybe do one of the races. I get to enjoy the wonderful views of corn fields where I run most of the time. Not quite the same.

Definitely some nice views running down canyons Jim. But I think every part of the world has it's own kind of beauty, and we runners are just blessed to be able to enjoy it in a way other folks don't experience. There are days I would much prefer a pancake flat run among the corn fields, it's so difficult here to find routes that don't have hills. Makes it tough to figure out pacing for tempo runs.

Hope you can make it out this way sometime for one of our mountain 1/2 or full marathons. We'd be happy to host you and/or your family at our place and I'm sure others on the blog would love to do the same. For beautiful canyon/mountain views when Utah is at it's springtime greenest I'm partial to Ogden, but others really love the red-rock desert fall scenery (and speed of the course!) of St. George. Park City, Utah Valley, and TOU (Logan) marathons are great too. And seems like there are new ones popping up all the time. Just heard of one that runs from Deer Valley resort down to the Canyons, giving a nice tour of a variety of 2002 Olympic venues.

Thanks for the invite! I will definitely keep that in mind. I would love to get out there and see some sights and run a race. All of those sound interesting but I would probably lean to the least hilly since it is hard to prepare here. This year has not been the best for races so I am going to try to plan better next year and get more races in. However, family, work, etc always takes priority.

I've been sitting here thinking about all the Utah marathons I've running and which one is least hilly, and it occurs to me that they're ALL hilly! But I guess Park City is at least net flat, unlike all the others so that would be a good one, but definitely not a PR course at 7000 ft.
